Paramount Global and Comcast Explore Strategic Streaming Partnership - In recent developments within the streaming industry, Paramount Global and Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, have reportedly engaged in preliminary discussions about a potential partnership or joint venture involving their streaming platforms, Paramount+ and Peacock. The Wall Street Journal reported that the sources revealed this strategic move as a solution to compete against leading services like Netflix and Disney+.
Fubo Files Lawsuit Against Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery Over New Sports Streaming Venture - The legal action, lodged recently in the Southern District of New York, claims that Disney, Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery, along with Disney’s ESPN and Hulu, have been “engaged in a years-long campaign to block Fubo’s innovative sports-first streaming business, resulting in significant harm to both Fubo and consumers.” The lawsuit contends that the defendants’ planned sports streaming service, set for a debut in fall 2024, is a direct copy of Fubo’s model and infringes upon antitrust regulations.
Netflix to Lose Top Spot in Arabic Markets by 2029, New Research Predicts - According to a study by Digital TV Research, the number of SVOD subscriptions in these thirteen Arabic-speaking markets is expected to double from 14 million in 2023 to 26 million by 2029. Netflix led with 3.8 million subscribers by the end of 2023, followed by Shahid VIP, a streaming service operated by the MBC Group, a major media conglomerate in the Middle East, with 3.5 million subscribers.
SEBI Reveals $240 Million Fund Misallocation at Zee Entertainment - Sebi’s scrutiny into the operations of Zee’s founding members brought to light the suspected misappropriation of about Rs 2000 crore (around $241 million), as reported by Bloomberg.
Vimeo Reports $106 Million in Revenue for Q4 2023 - The fourth quarter saw a slight 3% dip in Vimeo’s bookings, yet the company managed to maintain its revenue at $106 million. Despite stable revenue, Vimeo achieved a 78% gross margin and a net income of $8 million.
Roku Surpasses 80 Million Users While Facing Revenue Dip Amid International Expansion - Roku announced its Q4 2023 financial results and highlighted a rise in its user base, adding 4.2 million new accounts to reach 80 million, resulting in 14% growth compared to the same period last year. However, the revenue per user saw a slight decrease of 4%, falling to $39.92.
Paramount lays off 800 US Employees - Paramount Global has begun the layoffs of approximately 800 employees based in the United States, with affected individuals being informed of the decision yesterday. This move, which was hinted at last month by CEO Bob Bakish, represents a reduction of about 3% of the company’s total global workforce.
